Pilates is a powerful tool for enhancing both physical and mental well-being. This 6-week workshop is designed specifically for the Black and Brown community,
providing an accessible, inclusive space to learn the basics of Pilates. Whether new to Pilates or looking to deepen your practice, this workshop offers the perfect
opportunity to start your journey toward better health.
6-Week Commitment: A focused program where you'll learn foundational principles and pre-Pilates exercises.
Foundational Pilates Principles:
Breath Control: Understanding how to use your breath to facilitate movement and enhance core stability.
Concentration: Focusing your mind to connect more deeply with your body during each exercise.
Centering: Engaging your core as the powerhouse of all movement.
Precision: Moving with intention and accuracy to maximize the benefits of each exercise.
Flow: Connecting movements smoothly for a more balanced practice.
Control: Mastering your movements to avoid injury and increase strength.
Pre-Pilates Exercises: These are simpler movements that prepare your body for more advanced Pilates exercises, helping to build strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Why Are These Principles Important?
They create a solid foundation for more advanced Pilates movements.
Pilates is a corrective exercise program that can restore optimal alignment and promote more efficient movement patterns.
Over time, it increases functional strength and awareness, lowers the risk of lifestyle diseases, and improves overall body function.
Pilates strengthens the connection between the body and mind, fostering mental resilience as well as physical strength.
This practice does more than just strengthen and elongate muscles; it enhances the mind-body connection, leading to improved focus and mindfulness.
Ultimately, Pilates not only supports strength and flexibility but also fosters new abilities and improved function in everyday life.
Barriers to Pilates Access in the Black and Brown Community:
Cost: Pilates classes can be expensive, limiting access for many.
Location: Quality Pilates studios may not be easily accessible in predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods.
Representation: A lack of diversity in instructors and participants can make Pilates feel unwelcoming or irrelevant.
Awareness: Many in the community may not be aware of the benefits of Pilates or may see it as an activity not meant for them.
Deconditioning: Physical inactivity due to socio-economic factors can lead to a lack of confidence in starting a new fitness regimen.
